BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1938 in Marshfield Oregon, a 5th generation Oregonian. Raised in Garden Home, southwest Portland.

Although exposed to art when young with time spent at the Portland Art Museum and with many artists in the family, Katy did not start to paint until she was 38 years old. She went back to school and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at OSU in 1986, 30 years after graduating from high school. In 1987, she was a Resident Artist at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology for 10 weeks and painted on location each day studying the effect of light on colors.

Katy and her husband, Carl, lived in Cannon Beach Oregon for 11 ½ years. While there, Katy owned a studio-gallery for two years. She painted still life subjects and people in the studio and area landscapes out on location. She then taught non credit painting classes through Clatsop Community College for two years. During this time, she began her Cannon Beach Paint Abouts. Furnishing the equipment, supplies and instruction, she took participants out on location to paint.

In 2001 Katy and Carl moved back to Albany Oregon to be closer to family. She enjoys the active and open arts community in the mid Willamette Valley where she goes out on location with the Vista and Vineyards group to paint on location during the five drier months. She has recently joined the PAPO (Plein Air Painters of Oregon) based in Bend and loves exploring and painting Central Oregon scenes. Painting trips to the Oregon coast and the Columbia River Gorge round out her on site painting experiences in beautiful Oregon.

Self published in  2005,  A Painter’s View: Lewis and Clark in Western Oregon and Washington, (http://www.brolxpress.com). contains 70 of Katy’s oil paintings of Lewis and Clark sites in their present day condition, Lewis and Clark quotes from 200 years ago and Katy’s commentary tying the two together. Lovers of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, the mighty Columbia as it flows to the Pacific, the Cape Disappointment area of SW Washington, and the Astoria, Seaside and Cannon Beach areas of NW Oregon are excited with the book.
